Walk On Glass Floors Specialist Installation

When it comes to making an impressive design statement in your home, a walk-on glass floor is hard to beat. Large glass panels in the floor of your property installed by walk on glass floor specialists are perfect for multi-floor properties, as the glass floor throws light down into sun-starved interiors or below.

How are glass floors used?

It is not always easy for light to permeate to the heart of a property as planning restrictions can often limit the size of windows on new builds, whilst on conversion or renovation projects homeowners find that they are limited by the existing structure of the property. Interior designers often look to ‘borrow light’ in certain areas of the home, with features such as open-plan layouts, open-tread glass staircases and glass internal floors.

Another popular option for designers or homeowners is seeking the help of walk on glass floor specialists. They can install structural glass floors which enable natural light to freely seep through into gloomy hallways, cellars and dingy basements without impeding the function of your floor. Often homeowners experience unhappiness with the limited amount of natural light in their home following a cellar conversion. A walk on glass floors specialist can provide the solution by installing glass floors that bring life to otherwise dark rooms with glorious light.

Where should you install a walk on glass floor?

Walk on glass floors are most effective when located near another major light source, to take best advantage of the light that’s streaming through.

For this reason you’ll often see internal glass panels positioned close to the runs of bi-fold doors, fixed floor-to-ceiling windows or beneath rooflights which maximise the amount of natural light pulled through into the room below. Our walk on glass floor specialists install glass floors that are strong, safe and can withstand the weight and pressure of being walked on whilst being aesthetically magnificent.

We can install glass floors both internally and externally depending on your individual needs. Walk on glass floors in fact require minimal installation hassle compared with other large glass solutions. A glass floor walkway can be to excellent effect to link together two spaces.

So far as external installations go, we would recommend installing anti-slip resistance glass given that glass can become slippery when wet and cause accidents. At Glass & Stainless, we offer slip-retardant glass, and there are a number of slip-resistant finishes to choose from, including ceramic fritted patterns, sandblasted finishes with custom dots or patterns and specialist textured glass. All walk on glass floors are fit flush with the floor, meaning you can maintain the function of the floor as normal whilst illuminating the room below.

How can walk on glass floors stand out?

Our walk on glass floor specialists will encourage you to get creative with your floors, as walk on glass floors can be installed in a number of different custom shapes.

You could also install recessed LED lights to illuminate your floor and the spaces below when the sun falls, creating a glowing ambience throughout the evening.

Choose from a selection of opaque, coloured, or frosted glass obscured interlayers. Remember however, that certain glass finishes may minimise the amount of light the floor lets through. Larger multi-panel floors can be supported by aluminium, steel or even glass beams depending on your preference, creating a real ‘wow’ factor in your home.

How can walk on glass floors be used to best effect?

A walk on glass floor could be a perfect feature to showcase a below-ground wine cellar.

For added practicality, the floor can be fixed or hinged to give you direct access to your wine cellar below with a romantic, winding staircase. The contemporary appearance of a walk-on glass floor above your wine cellar can act as a talking point for family and visitors when hosting dinner parties, while at the same time rewarding you with a niche space in which to store your valuable collection.

A walk on glass floor can also showcase other character features in your home. In our experience, we’ve found that glass well covers are a popular option for historic homes. Homeowners often wish to showcase the incredibly unique features of their property.

Owners of more modern properties may wish to utilise a walk on glass floor on balconies or to show-off a swimming pool located a floor below, creating a luxurious, contemporary feel.

What type of glass is used for walk on glass floors?

Our walk on glass floor specialists recommend using toughened and laminated glass in order to ensure the safety of occupants.

Laminated glass ensures that the failure of one of the glass panes does not cause a significant issue, particularly if the floor protects a dangerous drop which could result in serious injury for occupants. Laminated glass has a PVB interlayer of 2 x 1.52mm between the two panes of glass, holding them together. An additional benefit of using laminated glass is that the layers in the laminated glass can improve your home’s energy efficiency as its layered design provides better heat insulation.

Whilst toughened glass is achieved by heating regular glass to extremely high temperatures and cooling it rapidly, making it 400 to 500 percent more resistant to heat and shock. Toughened glass will break into small, blunt pieces under pressure, a much safer alternative to the shards and splinters that result from normal glass shattering.

It’s worth noting that toughened glass cannot be re-cut after it has been toughened; it must be cut prior to the toughening process. We will ensure that you are completely confident in your design before we begin the production of the glass floor.
